October 23rd - 27th

It was a wonderful, wintery week in Kindergarten! Thank you so much for making sure your child was dressed appropriately for the weather this week. Students were able to have lots of fun and enjoy their outside time at recess because they were warm and dry! We worked hard on remembering the best order to put all of our snow stuff on and gained more independence doing it each day!

Learning Intention:
- Children explore how messages can be organized

I Can:
- Explore messages shared for different reasons
- Identify where reading begins and where to go after (return sweep)
- Identify the first and last letter in a word
- Identify the first and last word on a page or in a message
- Identify corresponding written words as they are read aloud

Everyday we read the morning message together as a class. The students are always excited to be 'reading detectives' and figure out what it says! They are beginning to recognize patterns in the words I use each time I write the message (Good morning Kinders! / Love Ms. H 💗) and are eager to use the 'fun finger' to point to the words as we read them. We also have lots of playing 'I Spy' where I challenge them to locate different letters, sounds and words in the message. We are learning about correct direction for reading, simple forms of punctuation and what a sentence is.

We also started our library visits this week!
Library day for the Monday/Wednesday class will be on Wednesdays and the Tuesday/Thursday class will visit the library on Thursdays. We talked about taking very good care of the books we have borrowed and the importance of remembering to return them each week so that others may have a chance to borrow them too!

In case you missed it...here are our Halloween Costume Creatures from the Dance

October 16th - 20th

Learning Intention:
- Children examine properties of objects
(Science Topic - Matter: Understandings of the physical world are deepened by investigating matter and energy)

I Can:
- Explore properties of various objects using one or more of the 5 senses
- Describe properties of various objects

Last week we looked at Mrs. Dupuis' pumpkin together as a large group. We practiced using our sense of sight to look closely and describe many different properties of the pumpkin that we noticed. This week, we talked a little more about some of our other senses (taste, touch, smell, hearing) and students had the chance to work in small groups to identify the properties of some really interesting gourds! Using all of our senses (except for taste!) we investigated the gourds and came up with some great words to describe them - bumpy, long, curvy, round, 3-D, smooth, orange, greenish-yellow, spotted, cold, hard, prickly, pointed...the students were true property detectives! After having a chance to investigate all 6 of the different gourds, students were invited to blend their scientist lens with an artist lens and pick one of the gourds to draw. We talked about scientific or real drawings and the importance of looking closely and drawing 'what you see'.  All of the gourds had a very unique shape which made this a challenging task...but students did a wonderful job taking a risk and trying their best!

We also had the chance to look closely and learn a little bit about sunflowers this week from a friend in Grade 3 who brought in a few that he grew in his garden! After he shared them with us, we did a directed drawing of a sunflower 🌻

We often have a 'Friday Feeding' time where we sit around the carpet and feed Echo his super worms. This week Echo wanted to say a BIG thank you to LW for bringing him his favourite treat...a delicious blue hornworm! 🐛

October 9th - 13th

It was another wonderful week in Kindergarten 💗 We explored some new centres, played a dice math game, wrote in our journals and looked closely at Mrs. Dupuis' super cool pumpkin!

Learning Intention:
- Children investigate quantity to 10

I can:
- Recognize a number of familiar objects as a quantity
- Relate a numeral to a specific quantity

Through a variety of centre activities and games, students have the opportunity to explore and engage with different numeracy experiences. We have been working on recognizing numerals, matching numerals to a quantity, as well as counting sets of objects using one to one correspondence - which is the skill of counting accurately by pointing to one object as you say one number. At our popsicle stick pull centre, students practice 1:1 counting by pulling a numbered popsicle stick out of a container and then place the corresponding quantity of foam shapes on the stick using tweezers (this helps strengthen their pincher grasp). This week, we also learned a new math game called 'Roll and Build' where students worked in partners to build a tower city. Students played by taking turns rolling a die, and either subitized (recognized a quantity on objects at a glance without counting) or counted the dots on the die to see how many blocks tall they needed to make their tower. We focused on using 1:1 correspondence while counting our dice dots as well as the blocks we used for building our towers. Lastly, students had to place their tower on the numeral that matched the number of blocks in their tower.

October 2nd - 6th

💛 Happy Thanksgiving 💛
Hope your weekend was full of lots of love and laughter

Learning Intention:
- children examine and describe surrounding environments
- children explore listening and speaking skills through a variety of literacy experiences

I Can:
- use my senses to make observations about the environment
- represent a local environment in nature
- practice my listening and speaking skills through sharing oral stories
- share stories, songs or poems individually or as part of a group

This week we practiced slowing down and looking closely while exploring the nature areas around our school. We were eager to learn what the land had to teach us and excitedly became wrapped up in the different nature stories happening all around us!  We talked lots about the changes we saw happening...which sparked our thinking and had us coming up with many wonderful wonders such as -
  • Why do leaves fall off the trees?
  • What happen to all the ladybugs?
  • Why can we still see the moon in the sky during the day?
  • How do some berries end up so far away from the tree they fell off?
  • What makes the leaves and grass so wet in morning?

Back inside the classroom, we listened to a story called 'The Fox and the Falling Leaves' and talked about how sometimes change can be hard and a little scary...but often it can also mean new adventures and learning. We made up our own song about the falling leaves and had lots of fun acting out the different parts!

Fall stories came to life at our loose parts centres, as students created beautiful works of art with the collection of fall inspired objects!

September 25th - 29th

It was a very busy week as we honoured Terry Fox with our school run as well as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with Orange Shirt Day.

As part of our learning in Social Studies, children begin to demonstrate an understanding of the multiple social, physical, cultural and linguistic factors that contribute to an individual's unique identity.

Learning Intentions:
- students appreciate characteristics, interests, gifts and talents of others

I Can:
- appreciate feelings, ideas, stories and experiences shared by others
- value the oral traditions of others

Terry Fox Run

We listened to stories about Terry Fox and learned all about his 'Power of One' attitude. Some of us made personal connections and shared our own stories about cancer and our loved ones. We were reminded of the importance of always trying to help others and leaving lots of Heartprints wherever we go.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Each day, The Morning Cree Song invites us to come together at the carpet. Students always listen and watch closely, noticing the different language, landscapes, animals and instruments. We have been working on learning the meaning of the words as well as how to sing them.

We have also been working on learning the following Land Acknowledgement -
