March 18th - 22nd

Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me during conferences. It is always great to connect to share the amazing growth and next steps for your child.

It was a very quick and busy week! We had a fabulous time at Telus Spark exploring and learning about lots of different things. Some of the highlights for students were the robot dog, toilet water fountain, bed of nails, giant water table and the cool experiments we did during our 'Delightful Mix' program.

Learning Intention:
- Children examine properties of objects

I Can:
- Explore properties of various objects using one or more of the five senses
- Describe properties of various objects
- Compare properties of various objects

March 11th - 15th

This week we talked about 'Part-Part-Whole' in math as we were busy composing and decomposing different numbers.

Learning Intention:
- Children interpret compositions of quantities within 10

I Can:
- Identify a quantity in various groups or arrangements
- Compose quantities within 10
- Recognize various ways to make 5 and 10

Decomposing and composing quantities are related concepts and a critical component of number sense. Decomposing means 'breaking' a quantity into parts - 10 can be decomposed into 5 and 5, 3 and 7, 1 and 9, etc. Or we would compose a quantity of 10 by putting together 5 and 5 or 8 and 2, etc. Building fluency with decomposing and composing numbers helps develop flexibility in understanding and calculating numbers. Experience with composing and decomposing numbers helps develop computational fluency. Having a strong understanding of the parts-whole relationship supports mental math strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

March 4th - 8th

It was a busy week in Kindergarten filled with lots of problem solving and programming! We had some fancy new friends join our classroom and we were all very excited to learn more about them!

Computer Science:
Problem solving and scientific inquiry are developed through the knowledgeable application of creativity, design and computational thinking

Learning Intention:
- children interpret instructions in various environments

I Can:
- match an action to the corresponding instruction
- recognize when actions do not correspond to instructions
- engage in activities that involve following instructions in various contexts
- engage in activities that involve following instructions presented in various ways

Introducing our Tale Bots! ðŸ¤–
For the next few weeks students will have the opportunity to strengthen their logical thinking skills while learning about robotics. Coding fosters creativity, improves storytelling skills and helps form foundational skills in math and computer literacy. Coding is also a great way to build confident problem solvers! We practiced our 'See - Think - Wonder' thinking routine as we looked more closely at our new classmates....
  • "I can see different coloured buttons on the top!"
  • "I see an up button and down button."
  • "I notice that there is a button with a person dancing on it!"
  • "I see a microphone button!"
  • " I notice that there are 9 buttons."

  • " I Think the X button will make it turn off and the orange button will make it turn on."
  • "Maybe if you press the microphone button it will look up something for you just like Siri."
  • " I think if you push the microphone then a little microphone will pop up and the robot will sing to you!"

  • "I wonder what we are going to do with them?"
  • "I wonder where they came from?"
  • "I wonder how long it lasts...does it have a battery in it?"
  • "I wonder if can come to the gym with us?"

February 26th - March 1st

This week we learned about Pink Shirt Day and how it started. We watched a video about how David Sheppard and Travis Price decided to make a difference by taking action. Students quickly made many connections between the story of Pink Shirt Day and the our anchor text - The Power of One.

Learning Intention:
- children recognize boundaries in various situations

I Can:
- identify how to communicate personal needs and expectations to others in various situations

We talked about what a bully is and the difference between someone who is just being rude and someone who is being a bully. We talked about what kindness looks like sounds like and feels like. We also talked about the importance of recognizing when you don't feel good about the way someone is treating you and some different ways to communicate your feelings about it.

Students were excited to spread kindness and Heartprints to everyone all throughout the school this week 💗 We designed our own pink shirts and finished our work about describing love using our 5 senses.
