This week we talked about 'Part-Part-Whole' in math as we were busy composing and decomposing different numbers.
Learning Intention:
- Children interpret compositions of quantities within 10
I Can:
- Identify a quantity in various groups or arrangements
- Compose quantities within 10
- Recognize various ways to make 5 and 10
Decomposing and composing quantities are related concepts and a critical component of number sense. Decomposing means 'breaking' a quantity into parts - 10 can be decomposed into 5 and 5, 3 and 7, 1 and 9, etc. Or we would compose a quantity of 10 by putting together 5 and 5 or 8 and 2, etc. Building fluency with decomposing and composing numbers helps develop flexibility in understanding and calculating numbers. Experience with composing and decomposing numbers helps develop computational fluency. Having a strong understanding of the parts-whole relationship supports mental math strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.
