February 20th - 23rd

What a beautiful week to enjoy some sunshine and snowshoeing!

Learning Intentions:
- children explore physical activity in a variety of contexts

I can:
- perform physical activity experiences that provide personal enjoyment
- explore a variety of seasonal physical activities
- explore movement in a variety of outdoor activity contexts

Students we super excited to strap on their snowshoes and get outside! We talked lots about patience and perseverance as we learned that we had to walk a little differently (with our feet more apart) and that sometimes the snowshoes fall off...but it was okay because we could easily put them right back on and keep going!

We discovered many things on our snowshoeing adventure like the interesting cloud shapes in the sky, our community 'rent-a-rink', and different types of tracks left by animals and humans...including the cool prints left in the snow by our snowshoes!

Here's a few things students had to say about our snowshoeing experience...
  • "It was fun walking in the snow...I think we got stronger legs from doing it!"
  • "I really liked running down the hills with my snowshoes on!"
  • "It was a little hard because snow kept getting stuck in my snowshoes"
  • "My favourite part was looking at the rink"
  • "The think I liked the most about snowshoeing was spending times with my friends!"
  • "It was fun running up and down the hills!"

💗 Happy Valentine's Day 💗

This week we talked lots about kindness, friendship and love.

Learning Intention:
- Children examine healthy relationships in learning and playing environments

I Can:
- define and practice friendship

We learned a new song about kindness by The Juicebox Jukebox...

Students also shared their thoughts and ideas about what the word 'love' means to them...
  • "Love means happy"
  • "You can love someone by sharing"
  • "Love is helping people out"
  • "I say I love you to my parents when I go to bed!"
  • "Love means being gentle with people"
  • "You can say 'I would love to be your friend' to somebody"
  • "Love means caring about people"
  • "If other people are having a bad day, you can show love by being kind to them"
  • "Love is making people have smiles on the face"

Students were busy spreading lots of love and friendship while handing out their Valentine's Day cards!

We also had lots of fun exploring curling in P.E. class this week!

February 5th - 9th

Organizing Idea:
- Phonics > foundational literacy is supported by understanding relationships between sounds in oral language and the letters that represent them

Learning Intention:
- Children make connections between letters and sounds in words

I Can:
- identify letters by characteristics (straight/curved lines, height, shape)
- recognize upper and lower case letters by name
- make connections between letters and sounds in words

We are always working on developing our literacy skills and this week we focused on looking closely at the letters of the alphabet according to some distinguishable characteristics such as height (sky, grass, dirt letters), shape, as well as straight and curved lines.

There are so many ways we explore letters - here are just a few...

January 29th - February 2nd

It was a wonderful week filled with lots of great learning!

Learning Intentions:
- Children explore size (length, weight, capacity, area) through direct comparison (This week we focused on the length of a variety of classroom objects)

I Can:
- compare the length the length of two objects directly
- describe the size of an object in relation to another object using comparative language (longer, shorter, same)

Students had lots of fun finding objects from around the classroom to make direct size comparisons. We practiced using comparative words such as - longer, shorter and same, to directly compare two objects.
  • "My lunch kit is shorter than the block."
  • "This dish is the same length as my block."
  • "My block is definitely longer than my water bottle."
  • "This wooden dish is the same (length) as my leg!"
  • "The lizard is shorter than the dish...but what if we put 2 lizards together...maybe they would be as long as it?"
Using non-standard measurement, students began using one of their chosen objects to measure the other objects...It turned into a measuring party!
  • "I wonder how many googly eyes long this block is?"
  • "It took 3 pencil crayons to be the same length as the bowl!"
  • "I counted and this block is 27 cubes long!"

A few photos from the week...
