December 18th - 22nd

We had another very busy and exciting week in Kindergarten!
We created beautiful Northern Lights artwork for our concert, listened to lots of holiday stories and talked about some of our own special holiday traditions.

Wishing you a happy holiday filled with lots of love and laughter 💗

December 11th - 15th

It was another wonderful week in Kindergarten 💗
We have been buzzing with excitement and practicing lots for our upcoming concert!

Learning Intention:
- children investigate quantity to 10

I Can:
- recognize a number of familiar objects as a quantity
- represent a quantity in different ways
- relate a numeral to a specific quantity

We had lots of fun reading the story The Napping House by Audrey Wood, and wildly laughed out loud as each character (a child, dog, cat, mouse, and a flea) piled on top of Granny  as they slept! After the story, we worked together as a large group to figure out how many legs were in Granny's house. Our first strategy was using blocks to represent all of the legs in the story and then we double checked our answer using another strategy by drawing a picture and labeling the legs. Next we had to figure out how many legs were in each of our own houses!

December 4th - 8th

A huge thank you for all the generous 'Warm Feet, Warm Hearts' donations 💗
Over the past few weeks, the students have shown much learning, kindness and compassion about this important project.

Learning Intention:
- Children experiment with sounds in words
(Phonological Awareness: Foundational literacy is supported by the ability to identify and manipulate sounds in oral language)

Understandings:
- Words are made up of sounds (phonemes)
- Words that rhyme have the same sound at the end
- Words have initial and final sounds (phonemes)
- Words can be separated into parts (segmentation)
- Sounds can be blended to form spoken words

I Can:
- Identify sounds at the beginning/middle/end of spoken words
- Identify 1 syllable rhyming words
- Sort words based on their initial/final sounds
- Separate compound words into 2 individual words
- Identify the number of syllables in 1 -3 syllable words
- Blend sounds to form words

We have been working hard on building our phonological and phonemic awareness skills during our morning message times, read alouds, journal work, and through playing a variety of fun word games. These skills are both a necessary component of early reading and spelling development. Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of words and phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. Letters (or combinations of letters) represent the individual phonemes in spoken words. Below are some literacy support videos from the CBE that provide more information and examples of both phonological and phonemic awareness.

November 27th - December 1st

It's hard to believe that it's already December!!!

Learning Intention:
- Children identify and create repeating patterns

I Can:
- Recognize repeating patterns encountered in daily routines and play, including songs
- Recognize change or constancy between elements in a repeating pattern
- Predict the next elements in a repeating pattern
- Create a repeating pattern with up to three repeating elements

We absolutely love being pattern detectives and are always on the lookout for patterns in our environment! We have discovered many patterns such as...the days of the week and months of the year, the 4 seasons, the floor and ceiling tiles, action patterns, musical patterns, patterns on clothing...and so many more! We also looked closely at different types of patterns and learned about ways we could describe them. One way was using letters to label the pattern parts...AB, AAB, AABB, ABC.

We also had lots of fun sorting our 'Warm Feet, Warm Hearts' donations this week!
💗 Thank you again for your amazing generosity 💗
