It was really great having the chance to meet with everyone during Parent-Teacher Conferences! It's always so wonderful to celebrate student successes as well as talk about goals and next steps for learning. Thank you again for taking the time to connect with me about your child...I really appreciate it!

November 15th -17th

🍂 I hope everyone had a lovely Fall break 🍂

It was great to get back to school and get back into routine! Students had lots of wonderful stories to share about all of their adventures on their time off. We explored some new math activities and enjoyed some new centres this week.

Learning Intention:
- Children investigate quantity to 10

I Can:
- Recognize a number of familiar objects as a quantity
- Represent a quantity in different ways
- Relate a numeral to a specific quantity

This week we started working with our Counting Jars. First we talked about how to set up our journal page for recording our math thinking and learning. We copied the words Counting Jars off the board and then discussed the importance of organizing our written work on the page. This was our first whole group 'copy from the board' activity and the students eagerly took this on and did a great job! Once we had our page ready, we went through the steps of completing a counting jar task. Students had lots of fun working in partners, picking different jars to count and record through pictures and numbers in their journals. Ask your child who they worked with and about the objects they counted!

November 6th - 10th

Learning Intention:
- Students develop skills of historical thinking
I Can:
- Differentiate between events and activities that occurred recently and long ago

Students demonstrated great attentiveness and respect during our conversations this week about war and remembrance. They worked extremely hard preparing beautiful poppy art as well as a poppy wreath for our Remembrance Day assembly.

A few thoughts on what peace means from the students...
  • "I think peace means quiet."
  • "Taking big breaths and closing your eyes...that's peace."
  • "Peace means happy"
  • "Peace is being calm and quiet."
  • "Closing your eyes and doing yoga."
  • "I think peaceful means calm."
  • "Peace is when you sit on your sit bones and close your eyes."
  • "Peace makes you feel good inside."

We read the story A Poppy is to Remember by Heather Patterson and spent time talking about the significance of the poppy and why we wear it for Remembrance Day.

October 30th - November 3rd

It was so great seeing all the students dressed up in their costumes this week! We enjoyed some Halloween centres, a Halloween Parade and had lots of fun doing some STEM activities with our Grade 4 buddies!

I Can:
- Consider ideas and information from varies sources
- Compare and contrast information provided

The challenge for the M/W Class was to create a structure to go with the 'The 5 Five Little Pumpkins' song. They were given various materials and asked to build a 'gate' for the 5 pumpkins to sit on. They were encouraged to test the stability of their structure as well as create a variety of different styles of gates (taller, longer, etc).

The  challenge for the T/Th Class was to get their spider to move using only the materials they were given. After some discussion, the students soon figured out that they could use their straw to blow the spider into motion. Some groups had spider races, some experimented with trying to move the spider in different directions, and some designed mini obstacle courses for their spiders to adventure through!
