This week we read the story My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss, and talked about many different types of feelings. We acted out various scenarios that might invoke these feelings and practiced using facial expressions as well as body language to represent them. Next we worked in partners practicing our 'feelings faces' and used iPads to capture some 'feelings photos'.

Ask your child to tell you about the feelings faces they practiced!

We also learned about Terry Fox and why he is an important Canadian Hero. Connecting back to both the Heartprints and Power of One stories, students commented:

"Terry was leaving Heartprints for the people with cancer"

"Terry started all by himself and then he met lots of people who helped him too"

This week we will continue to look at the impact that Terry had on others and show our support as we participate in Andrew Sibbald's Terry Fox run. We would love to have you join us if you would like to come out to cheer us on and show your support during our run!

The Monday/Wednesday class will have their run on Monday Sept. 25th, with Ms. Chen's Grade 5 class leading and supporting us in this activity. We will begin the run around 9:15am on the West side field. We will be running for about 15mins.

The Tuesday/Thursday class will participate in the whole school run on Tuesday Sept. 26th. Classes will be heading outside to begin the run around 1:15pm.

We have been talking about some pretty big words lately such as perseverance and resiliency, and how Terry Fox was a great example of both. During our gym times we have been practicing for the run by starting each class with doing a few warm up laps. Students have shown greater perseverance with this, and now understand that even though they might be feeling tired or it might be a little hard, they don't need to quit...instead they just need to slow down a little!

September 11th-15th

Hope everyone enjoyed the lovely Fall weather this weekend!

Last week was our first official full week of school and it was wonderful! Students are definitely getting the hang of our daily routines and gaining greater confidence and independence everyday!

Learning Intention:
  • Children explore listening and speaking through a variety of literacy experiences

I Can:
  • Engage in discussions about texts
  • Participate in large group discussions
  • Share personal experiences/stories through listening and speaking with others

We began our week by reading the story The Power of One - Every Act of Kindness Counts - by  Trudy Ludwig and Mike Curato. Students were invited to look closely and notice details on the cover as well as think about what the story might be about. Here are a few things students had to say:
  • "I see a girl in a yellow dress."
  • "I notice she has orange shoes."
  • "I see that she has a flower in her hand."
  • "I notice that there is a little bit of glowing around her!"
  • "I see more people around her, like the outline of people."
  • "I think it is going to be about magic!"
  • "I think it's going to be about kindness and love."
  • "Maybe it is about making friends."
  • I think it's about family and the power of one."

As we read the story students connected back to our Heartprints book and talked about how when someone leaves a heartprint for someone else it makes the world a better place. We also talked about what 'the power of one' meant. They quickly pointed out that lots of people didn't even notice the boy being unkind to the girl in the story...but ONE girl did and when she stepped in to help, she made a big difference in how the story unfolded.

We will continue to unpack many things from this beautiful story, but to start, students shared their own ideas about what kindness means to them:
  • "When you love someone and take care of them."
  • "Helping people and sharing."
  • "Making a new friend."
  • "Helping in the classroom."
  • "Being nice to each other."
  • "Saying kind words."
  • "Having fun and sharing stuff."
  • "It's like giving someone something like a flower or some fruit."

September 5th - 8th

We are really starting to get the hang of Kindergarten!

Learning Intention:

  • Children examine healthy relationships in various learning and playing environments

I Can:

  • practice friendship

This past week we continued to learn about and practice our classroom routines and had our first visits to the gym and music room! We also talked lots about 'What's Important' in kindergarten. Here are a few of the ideas that students came up with -

  • "Having fun!"
  • "I think you need to clean up good."
  • "You've got to listen to the teacher."
  • "Sharing all the toys...and not making a big mess!"
  • "It's important to be nice to everyone."
  • "Being a good friend."
Such wonderful ideas and totally bang on too!
We are focusing on building healthy relationships with our own classmates as well as the others in our school community. These relationships are  supported through and built on communication, collaboration, empathy and respect...all of which will continue to be a main focus in our kindergarten learning.

We read the story Heartprints by P.K. Hallinan, and talked about what a 'heartprint' was. Students shared their different ideas of how they could leave a heartprint for someone else -
  • "I am going to smile at people to make them smile too!"
  • "I will help people when they fall down and cry"
  • "I'm going to play on the playground with my new friend!"
💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗    💗

All through the day we practiced leaving heartprints for others!
We realized that we could leave heartprints and practice friendship during:

💗 Centers
  • sharing materials appropriately
  • playing fairly
  • including others
  • taking turns
  • helping each other

💗 Carpet Time
  • sharing the sitting space
  • taking turns sitting on the stumps and stools
  • staying in our own personal space
  • keeping our hands to ourself
  • looking at the speaker

💗 Snack and Lunch Time
  • remembering our manners (please, thank you, excuse me)
  • cleaning up after ourselves
  • staying safe and keeping others safe (not sharing food, sitting down)

Welcome To Kindergarten!

Our first days in K were fantastic!

We took some time to check out our own classroom learning space as well as tour the school building.  We explored with learning materials, drew a picture and had a chance to play with our friends at the park. We are ready for a great year!

Each week I will update our blog with some of the learning highlights in our classroom from that week. I will share the intention for learning activities as well as some snapshots of our learning in action.
