Hope everyone enjoyed the lovely Fall weather this weekend!
Last week was our first official full week of school and it was wonderful! Students are definitely getting the hang of our daily routines and gaining greater confidence and independence everyday!

Learning Intention:
- Children explore listening and speaking through a variety of literacy experiences
I Can:
- Engage in discussions about texts
- Participate in large group discussions
- Share personal experiences/stories through listening and speaking with others
We began our week by reading the story The Power of One - Every Act of Kindness Counts - by Trudy Ludwig and Mike Curato. Students were invited to look closely and notice details on the cover as well as think about what the story might be about. Here are a few things students had to say:
- "I see a girl in a yellow dress."
- "I notice she has orange shoes."
- "I see that she has a flower in her hand."
- "I notice that there is a little bit of glowing around her!"
- "I see more people around her, like the outline of people."
- "I think it is going to be about magic!"
- "I think it's going to be about kindness and love."
- "Maybe it is about making friends."
- I think it's about family and the power of one."
As we read the story students connected back to our Heartprints book and talked about how when someone leaves a heartprint for someone else it makes the world a better place. We also talked about what 'the power of one' meant. They quickly pointed out that lots of people didn't even notice the boy being unkind to the girl in the story...but ONE girl did and when she stepped in to help, she made a big difference in how the story unfolded.
We will continue to unpack many things from this beautiful story, but to start, students shared their own ideas about what kindness means to them:
- "When you love someone and take care of them."
- "Helping people and sharing."
- "Making a new friend."
- "Helping in the classroom."
- "Being nice to each other."
- "Saying kind words."
- "Having fun and sharing stuff."
- "It's like giving someone something like a flower or some fruit."
