Being engaged in some way for the good of the community, whatever that community, is a factor in a meaningful life. We long to belong, and belonging and caring anchors our sense of place in the universe. ~ Patricia Churchland

Learning Intentions:
- Students demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the characteristics and interests that unite members of communities and groups.

I Can:
- Value how personal stories express what it means to belong
- Value and respect significant people in my life
- Appreciate how participation in my communities affects my sense of belonging
- Examine the characteristics and interests that bring people together in groups

We have been exploring lots about what it means to belong to a community. Students were quick to identify many of the groups that they belong to such as their family or friends. We have talked about belonging to the Andrew Sibbald School group, the Kindergarten Blue group or Red group as well as other groups such as sports teams. Students have been working hard on their 'I Belong' books and have been excited to share with each other about their sense of belonging.

  • "I love being part of my family because my family loves me and makes me feel special"
  • "My family is important to me because they take care of me and make me feel happy when I'm sad."
  • "Being with my Grade 4 buddy makes me happy because they are always nice to me and help me learn things!"
  • "On my hockey team we have fun together and get to have Timbits sometimes after our practice!"
